Suillus cavipes (Opatowski) Smith & Thiers. Hollow-stemmed Boletus. Cap 3-10cm across, convex expanding to flat, with an inrolled margin which sometimes has veil remnants adhering to it; dull yellow to rusty red-brown; dry, densely hairy, suede-like. Tubes decurrent, short; pale yellow flushing olivaceous. Pores large, angular; same color as tubes. Stem 40-80 x 10-20mm, solid becoming distinctly hollow in base; lemon yellow with an indistinct net above the ring; darker like cap below and covered in fine hairs. Veil white, netlike; leaving remnants on margin and a distinct band on stalk. Flesh white to yellowish and sometimes pinkish in stem. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores subcylindric to fusiform, 7-10 x 3-4µ. Deposit olivaceous. Habitat scattered to clustered under larch. Common. Found in northern North America. Season September-November. Edible-good. Comment To be sure you have the correct species cut a mature one in half and check that the stem is hollow. |
