Tyromyces fissilis (Berk. & Curt.) Donk Bracket 6-30cm across, 4-10cm wide, 1-7cm thick, semicircular; whitish, discoloring or drying yellowish then reddish; almost hairy. Tubes 4-l0mm deep. Pores 1-3 per mm, angular; white or pale flesh-pink, bruising yellowish then deep reddish brown and becoming waxy on drying. No stem. Flesh fibrous, tough, zoned, drying hard; white to pale flesh-colored. Odor strong, cheese-like. Taste bitter or astringent. Spores ovoid or ellipsoid, smooth, 3.5-4.5 x 3-3.5µ. Habitat growing on the wounds of living hardwoods. Found in eastern North America, west to Ohio. Season July-August. Not edible.
