I suspect this is a Morchella vulgaris, but am no expert. Taken mid April, in a planter with large mulch, Los Angeles Calif.

A surprise by our gazebo this morning(May 18/09), just 10 minutes off the downtown centre of Montreal, QC, CA.
There were two. My daughter kicked over one of them, which led to the discovery.
Wish I trusted by identification of it better, because we'd be having steak and morels for dinner!
