Inocybe fastigiata var. umbrinella (Bres.) Heim. Cap 1.5-4cm across, conical, then flat with a distinct umbo; fibrillose brown, but soon radially splitting, especially when dry, except for the umbo, which remains brown and scaly. Gills adnexed; pallid at first, finally snuff brownish. Stem 15-35 x 2-3mm, not bulbous; pallid whitish to browny gray. Flesh pallid. Odor slight. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 10-13(16) x 5.2-7(8.5)µ. Deposit snuff brown. Pleurocystidia absent. In 2 percent KOH slight yellow tones were seen in the hyphae. Habitat in mixed woods. Found in Mississippi and no doubt other southern states. Season June-August. Not edible, most Inocybes have been found to contain toxins. Comment Inocybe fastigiella Atkinson is very similar to this species and is also southern, but the spores are much smaller, not exceeding 10 x 5.5µ. |
